City sales tax and sewer rate increase effective January 1

The City of Midwest City wants to remind its residents that the current sales tax rate and sewer usage rate has increased, effective January 1.

The sales tax has increased .55% or to a total sales tax rate of 8.35%. The tax rate increase approved by the citizens in August 2011 will help fund a major renovation to the city’s Northside Wastewater Treatment Plant. City officials estimate that the increase in the sales tax rate will generate approximately $3.3 million annually. A sewer rate increase of $.90 per 1,000 gallons will raise $1.4 million and will be used to help pay the $4.7 million annual debt service payment for the renovation project.

The rate increase will apply equally to both residential and commercial customers.
