The Oklahoma City Community Foundation recently awarded the City of Midwest City a Parks and Public Spaces Initiative Grant in the amount of $24,000.
The purpose of the grant is to install 7 trailhead signs, ten directory sign, ten wayfinding signs, twenty-five mile markers and 2 master regional trails signs throughout the city’s 7-mile walking trail system and the new SCIP Recreational Trail’s 4 miles of off-road biking trails.
The new signage will assist trail users with identifying trail access, length, connections and amenities throughout the trail system. Community Development Director, Billy Harless said that the focus of the grant will be to activate the existing trails network and heighten awareness of potential connections to a regional system.
The City Council recently adopted a new name for the trail system, which is now called Spirit Trails.
Harless said the department will place signage out now to indicate future trails. The City hopes to have an additional 4 miles of walking trails completed by 2019.
