A project to improve SE 29th Street from Midwest Boulevard to west of Douglas Boulevard will begin Monday. The project includes reconstruction of the street, rebuilding the intersection of SE 29 Street and Midwest Boulevard with a concrete surface, drainage and sidewalk improvements, and improved signal detection at Midwest Boulevard and Industrial Boulevard.
The look of the corridor will also be enhanced with improvements to old driveways and the addition of grass and concrete medians.
Beginning Monday, SE 29 Street will be restricted to one lane in each direction. The work will begin on the north side of the street. When the work on the north side is complete, traffic will be shifted to the north and construction will begin on the south side.
Access to SE 29 Street will be maintained throughout the project but drivers should expect traffic delays and may choose to use alternate routes. Drivers are encouraged to use caution in the construction zone.
To access Town Center Plaza and the surroundings areas, drivers can use the Town Center exit off I-40 (Exit 157C/Eaker Gate).
Tinker Air Force Base is suggesting that regular users of the Hruskocy and Turnbull gates consider using gates along the east (Douglas Boulevard) and those coming from the west are encouraged to consider using the Tinker Gate at Air Depot Boulevard or the Vance Gate off of Sooner Road.
The improvement project is expected to take approximately 180 days depending on weather.
The project is an 80/20 split with 20 percent local dollars matching federal highway funds. Total contract amount is $4.4 million.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation will be inspecting and managing the improvement project. The contractor for the project is Schwarz Paving Company.
