Designed and built as a military support community, Midwest City has always been proud of its patriotic heritage. As we approach Flag Day on Friday, June 14, Mayor Matt Dukes wants to encourage everyone who displays the U.S. Flag in our community to educate themselves on proper etiquette. This is especially important to show respect for the numerous active-duty and retired service members who live in and visit Midwest City.

One of the most frequent breaches of flag etiquette is to display a flag that has been damaged by weather or harsh conditions. Here are a few things to remember if you have a damaged flag:

  • It is okay to repair it or have it repaired
  • It is okay to wash it with a mild soap and dry it on a gentle cycle or lay it flat.
  • If preferred, it is okay to dry clean it.
  • If you have a flag needing retirement, properly fold the flag, then hold a retirement ceremony in private or bring the flag to the community disposal box located in City Hall at 100 N. Midwest Blvd.

Useful resources on proper etiquette, care and retirement of the U.S. Flag are provided by the National Flag Foundation and can be found at https://nationalflagfoundation.org/
