City Manager Tim Lyon - Statement Regarding Shooting Incident in Joe B. Barnes Regional Park - May 20, 2022
The City Council of Midwest City, City staff and our first responder teams have been heartbroken about the tragic loss of life that happened in Joe B. Barnes Regional Park. From the City of Midwest City, our condolences go out to the family and friends of the 15-year-old young man who lost his life in this senseless act of violence.
As the investigation began, our Police Department, led by Chief Sid Porter, immediately implemented a safety action plan for the park. Residents and visitors to our community have likely noticed an increase in police presence, patrolling the park and the areas surrounding it.
Since the shooting, we’ve listened to the outpouring of concern from our residents about safety in Regional Park. What we’ve heard is that Midwest City families make lifelong memories there. This is our most popular park where they can relax, enjoy time with each other, and improve their well-being. The calls, comments and messages we’ve received confirm that this heartbreaking loss of life has taken place in the true heart of our community.
The City of Midwest City shares these feelings about Regional Park. We are heavily invested there, evidenced by the fact that it is home to our largest special events and the most popular recreation facilities that we maintain for the quality of life of our residents.
As we move forward, we will keep these feelings at the forefront of our plans and actions. We will move forward with the mantra that Midwest City parks exist for the wellness of our entire community. We will move forward with the understanding that every available resource should be used to try to keep our public spaces free from violence.
