Fireworks in Midwest City

Fireworks are illegal in our City limits. It is illegal to “store, sell, transport, explode or discharge any fireworks in the city” – which includes “firecrackers, airborne rockets, cartridges, sparklers, Roman candles and other devices producing a visible or audible effect by combustion, deflagration or detonation or other means, designed and intended for pyrotechnic display.” You can find this information in Sec. 15-31 and 32 of our code of ordinances.

The fine is $311.

If you see fireworks being discharged in your neighborhood, call 9-1-1. Please be prepared to sign a complaint. We get many calls about fireworks this time of year but typically they won’t be discharged in the presence of a police officer so we need the caller to identify the person or persons discharging fireworks, sign a citizen’s complaint if they want charges pursued and testify in court at a later date.

Also, please know that on the 4th of July, we will receive a significant increase in calls about illegal fireworks and we will do our best to respond, but our response to calls has to be prioritized. For example, an accident with an injury would be given priority over illegal fireworks. Safety personnel are also dedicated to the Tribute to Liberty event during this time.

Fireworks and PTSD

For people with PTSD, the sound of fireworks can cause panic attacks or trigger flashbacks. The experience can trigger nightmares, insomnia or other PTSD symptoms.

Also impacted are those with autism or developmental disabilities and victims of gun violence.

Fireworks and Pets

Fireworks can cause severe stress for pets such as dogs and cats. Horses have also been known to experience severe stress due to fireworks.

Animal experts recommend that you not bring your pet to 4th of July celebrations where fireworks will be present. Leave your dog or cat at home and create a quiet space with a favorite bed or blanket. Playing relaxing music can help sooth a panicked dog or cat.

Check your pet’s ID tags and microchip information as more pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other holiday.

Please be a good neighbor and don't set off fireworks in your neighborhood. It’s a perfect time to teach your children concern for others and animals by explaining why your family doesn’t set off fireworks.
