MWC Council Approves Face Coverings Ordinance
At last night’s Midwest City council meeting, the City Council approved an emergency public safety ordinance, COVID-19 Safety Code, requiring people to wear face coverings over their noses and mouths while in public places wherever it is not possible to maintain social distance from others.
Maintaining the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended six feet of social distancing in public places does not apply to those who live in the same household.
The ordinance, which went in effect immediately, will remain in place until September 22 when the council will consider whether to repeal, modify or extend it.
“The City Council’s goal in passing this ordinance is to protect the safety of our residents as well as those who work here and visit our city. Requiring face coverings is one of the most common sense and least restrictive measures we can take to slow the spread of the virus,” said City Manager Tim Lyon. “We want to keep our businesses open and prevent the loss of jobs for our residents while protecting the health and safety of our community.”
Some exceptions to the ordinance include young children under the age of 10, eating and drinking, medical examinations, or as a matter of personal safety. Private homes and personal automobiles are also excluded.
Answers to frequently asked questions and additional information, including a copy of the ordinance listing the exceptions, is available on the city’s website at https://www.midwestcityok.org/citycouncil/page/covid-19-safety-code-ord-....
There is no specific punishment or penalty included in the ordinance but those who refuse to wear a mask where it is required could face prosecution for criminal trespassing, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct or similar offenses based on circumstances.
Anyone with concerns about face coverings not being worn/required in public places can contact the city’s non-emergency number at 739-1388.
