2020 Winter Storm Recovery Update Number 6

Ice covered tree

On Monday, October 26, Governor Stitt declared a State of Emergency for 47 counties, including Oklahoma County. On November 13, Governor Stitt requested a Major Disaster Declaration from the federal government related to the devastating early season ice storm. The request covered 13 counties, including Oklahoma Country. As of today (December 9) there has not been a federal disaster declaration but we are hopeful it will be approved soon.

Following is the sixth update from the City of Midwest City regarding our storm recovery efforts.

Removal of Storm-related Vegetative Debris

On Monday, November 9 crews started the first of two passes picking up storm-related vegetative debris (branches, bushes, shrubs) in residential areas. The crews started on the east side of our city working toward the west side in square mile quadrants.

The current pass (First Pass) to pick up storm-related tree limbs and other vegetative debris will continue through January 21, 2021 (Previous predicted date was January 11, 2021).  Please make sure your debris is already at the curb and do not park vehicles in front of the piles.

Final Pass

Our second and final pass to pick up storm-related tree limbs and other vegetative debris will begin on January 13th. To view your estimated pickup date, please view the file "Storm Debris 2021 Pickup Final Pass Map" below.

All material must be at the curb before the date in the zone you live in for this final collection by the City. Please note that anything not at the curb by this date will not be collected by the City and you will be responsible for the disposal of it.

Please review the important reminders below:

Place your storm-related debris within 10 feet of your curb.
Your tree limbs do not have to be cut to any specific length.
Avoid placing it within five feet of your mailbox, electrical boxes, vehicles, gas meters, and any other objects.
Avoid stacking your debris under large trees or under power lines.
It is very important that you not place your debris on top of your water meter.
Please do not stack any debris within 10 feet of a fire hydrant.
Make sure you are not blocking the view of intersections with your stacks of debris.
If you have more debris than will fit within 10 feet of your curb, crews will pick up as much debris as they can reach, then you can move the remaining debris to within 10 feet of the curb so the crews can get it on the second pass. Remember that the public easement is within 10 feet of your curb. The crews can remove debris on the public easement or right-of-way, but not on private property.

What If Debris in Your Area Has Been Collected But Yours Has Not Been Collected

The trucks for tree limb collection are extremely large trucks. If you live on a small street or cul-de-sac, it is possible that the trucks with their equipment were too large to get down your street. They will have to return with different, smaller equipment to these areas of the city so there may be some delay in collecting your debris but it will be collected.

If there are cars parked on your street that prevent these extremely large trucks from being able to drive down your street, your debris will not be collected until the parked car are moved. Our crews are leaving flyers on these parked cars to ask that they be moved. In several instances, these flyers remain on the parked cars several days after they were placed. Please note that this will result in your debris not being collected.

Other Disposal Options

Midwest City residents take tree limbs and other vegetative debris to the Compost Facility at 7420 NE 36th St.  The Compost Facility has extended its hours though December 23 to Monday – Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on holidays.  (Please note that the Compost Facility will be closed December 24, 25 and 26 for the Christmas holiday and will reopen on Tuesday, December 29 with normal hours, which are Tues, Thurs and Sat from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The facility will be closed again January 1 and 2 for the New Year's holiday.)

No appointment is necessary. You must show proof of residency in Midwest City to use the facility. Bring your most recent utility bill and driver's license with a matching address. (Please note that commercial vehicles and contractors cannot use the Compost facility. This service is for residential disposal only.) For more information, contact the Public Works department at 739-1066.

You can take yard waste, tree debris or construction and demolition debris to the East Oak Landfill at 3201 Mosley Road in Oklahoma City. Midwest City residents receive a significantly discounted rate at the landfill so make sure to take a copy of your most recent utility bill and your driver’s license with you as verification of your residency. The landfill is open six days a week.

You can find information about requesting burn permits on the Fire Department's section of the city's website. Please note that you cannot burn on a Red Flag Alert day.

Quarterly Curbside and Special Bulk Pick Up Suspended

All of our manpower and efforts will be focused on storm recovery for the next several weeks. Because of this, our quarterly curbside bulk collection program is temporarily suspended while the storm clean up is underway. If you live in one of the areas that has been suspended and you have bulk waste (not tree limbs or brush) you can call Public Works to be scheduled for a free pick up. Please call 739-1066 for more information.

City Parks and Trails

We are discouraging residents from using city parks and trails where they are still hanging tree limbs and tree debris. Hidden Creek Golf Course and John Conrad Golf Course are both open now.
