Every spring, the Central Oklahoma Storm Water Alliance (COSWA) and its member cities partner with Upcycle Products Inc. in a regional effort to encourage Oklahoma residents to utilize a rain barrel or compost bin. The benefits of rain barrels or compost bins include:
- conserving water
- reducing water pollution
- improving air quality
- diverting waste from landfills
Rain barrels are a simple, efficient, and low-cost method that reduce the amount of stormwater runoff that leaves your property by collecting the water that drains from your home’s gutter system. During the summer, a rain barrel's water may help reduce your utility bill by using less city water. The stored water can be used to:
- water your lawn and gardens
- wash your car
- wash your dog
Small-scale composting diverts food scraps and yard waste, which compose 20-30 % of what we throw away, from landfills. The finished compost can be applied to your lawn and gardens as a non-chemical fertilizer which will improve the soil and grow healthier plants.
An additional benefit is that organics recycled in a backyard compost bin have a lower impact on our environment than they would if the materials were dumped in a landfill. The methane produced by organic material breaking down in a landfill is a contributor to global climate change.
This partnership allows Upcycle Products to offer discounted rain barrels at $69.50 and compost bins at $84.50 or $179.50.
